In April we had an awesome Bookmaking Fun! kid’s workshop. Each child learned a bunch of fun folds and some simple ways to sew up a book. Personalizing and decorating the book covers was definitely the highlight of the day! I’m sad we were so busy playing that we didn’t get many pictures of the finished products.
Check instructions for a pamphlet stitch here and some great accordian fold books here and here.
In March we were able to host a felted doll birthday party. Each girl was able to stuff and then decorate their doll. They learned how to needle felt wool roving to create their own unique doll! They made clothes from fabric scraps and tulle and had a blast giving their dolls fun accessories – sequin belts and headbands, purses, flowers, buttons, bracelets etc. We were cracking up at all the outfits!
We had a great time teaching this cute group of girls how to make felted purses! This intro to felting class covered the basics of needle felting and the girls got to raid Nancy’s stash of upcycled wool sweaters and wool roving. She even taught them her favorite trick – how to twist wool yarn into a perfect purse strap! We loved seeing all the fun designs and each gal got to take home a one-of-a-kind purse!
Interested in a custom felting class for a group? Contact Nancy at firstname.lastname@example.org for info!
We had a great time at our first Letterpress Workshop in February! It was a snowy day and it was nice to be cozy in the studio chatting and printing! Each participant learned the basics of letterpress and printed 25 thank you cards on our vandercook printing press. They also learned how to line envelopes and had fun choosing from a variety of patterned paper and envelopes.

We had a blast at our Printmaking Fun! kid’s workshop on Saturday. Each child did a series of monoprints and printed couple of robot prints on the letterpress. It was so fun to get messy and play with some printmaking techniques. I love seeing what everyone comes up with!
Click here for instructions on monoprinting at home. It’s a great activity for all ages and you can find most of the supplies around your house!
Welcome! We’d like to start off our blog by telling you a little bit about ourselves and our studio.
Winnie Press is a small letterpress, design, and fine arts studio run by James and Meredith Hendricks. Meredith recently finished her MFA in printmaking at the University of Utah and loves all things art and design. James is a general contractor and loves working on machines (old presses) and building things (letterpress studios).
Winnie Press started in 2007 when we bought our Vandercook Universal I printing press and hauled it (in the middle of the night!) from Boise, ID, to Provo, UT. We spent several months restoring the press and got it up and running at the beginning of 2008.
We nicknamed the press “Winnie” after Meredith’s maternal grandma Winifred. Winnie was a milliner and was known for her creations. She had a real knack for throwing parties and adding a little flare to everything she touched.
Since then we’ve added a few more presses to our collection, moved to Midway, UT, and built a studio in our backyard. We love working in “Winnie’s Workshop” and being in the beautiful mountain town of Midway.
We share the studio with Meredith’s mother, Nancy Jones. Nancy runs Wacky Woolies and makes beautiful felted goods. Like her mother Winnie, Nancy is full of life and always dreaming up new creations.
We hope you’ll check out our shop or take a class and come visit our studio!
